I just had a baby changing table made, built out of walnut, from a local woodworker. It was left unfinished so I could apply a safe, natural and completely non toxic finish. I noticed a couple of options on your site (Bio Poly Natural, Special Linseed Oil, Looking Glass Beeswax Polish). What would you recommend?
For a walnut baby’s crib I lean heavily on the purist side! Nothing is more important than the safety of loved ones.
The best thing to use for a the baby changing table is Baby Safe Crib Finish. This is a super pure finish with no toxic additives. Made from FDA GRAS ingredients and safe for food contact surfaces. It is zero VOC and the only odor is extra filtered and purified flax oil and beeswax. It will bring out the deep, beautiful wood tones of walnut.
The application is a simple wipe on, wipe off. You don’t have to sand if you don’t want although as a professional finisher, I sand everything, often.
Bio Poly Natural also meets USDA requirements for food contact surfaces. This too looks great on Walnut and I used it while my kids grew up with no problems or hesitation. But I don’t think you need something that strong for a baby changing table.
Both the Special Linseed Oil and Looking Glass Beeswax Polish are similar to Baby Safe Crib Finish. With any of these products I would have peace of mind knowing my baby isn’t exposed to harmful toxic materials.
Best wishes,
Tom
